  29. This is a MAJOR upgrade to the versions 1.x. If you tried any
  30. of the previous versions of the FM StepUp and did not like it by
  31. any reason, try this one - we hope you'll change your mind!

  33. SPECIAL NOTE for those who do not like registration reminders and
  34. love to evaluate shareware for long time: unlike many other
  35. shareware producers, we are using a passive reminder in this
  36. version -- you don't have to press any key or wait for some time
  37. to turn it off.

  40. if you tried and had given up the FM StepUp ver.1.x because of the
  41. conflict between FM StepUp and Toolbar, please take a look at the

  80. -----------------------------

  82. File Manager StepUp (or, briefly, FM StepUp) is a utility that
  83. dramatically improves File Manager. Instead of replacing File
  84. Manager, FM StepUp simply makes it better. When you install FM
  85. StepUp, additional commands are added to File Manager's menus, and
  86. existing commands are enhanced.
  87.  
  88. FM StepUp makes the File Manager an actually user friendly
  89. application. With FM StepUp installed in your system you will
  90. perform various file management operations easier and faster.
  91.  
  92. FM StepUp enhances standard dialog boxes of the File Manager,
  93. providing them with additional useful features (history lists,
  94. remembering you previous commands; 'verify' check boxes; 'browse'
  95. buttons; etc.).
  96.  
  97. FM StepUp allows you to combine most frequently used commands of
  98. File Manager into Quick Menu, so that you can access them just
  99. pressing the right button of your mouse.
  100.  
  101. FM StepUp makes your able to easily create, view, edit, or print
  102. arbitrary files, not necessarily associated with an application,
  103. and you can assign your favorite viewer or editor to do this.

  105. FM StepUp provides you with some unique or hard-to-find commands,
  106. allowing you, for example, to figure out the total size of a
  107. directory, including all its subdirectories; change date or time
  108. of the file; run the default screen saver whenever you want it to;
  109. etc.

  111. FM StepUp allows you to add your own commands to the File Manager
  112. and easily execute them. You may use this possibility to launch
  113. frequently used applications (such as Control Panel or Clipboard
  114. viewer) directly from File Manager menu, or to perform
  115. preprogrammed operations over files selected in a File Manager's
  116. window (UnZip or UnArj, for example).

  118. If you are a network administrator, FM StepUp can help you to
  119. restrict some of the File Manager's capabilities (in almost the
  120. same way as you do it for the Program Manager), allowing you to
  121. prevent your users from performing potentially dangerous or
  122. undesirable commands.

  124. After all, FM StepUp is highly customizable. You are in charge of
  125. almost every aspect of its functionality - from the size of the
  126. history lists to contents of the Quick Menu and Execute Menu.

  143. The only old thing is the price. Yes, due to success of the FM
  144. StepUp ver.1.x and support of our registered users, we were able to
  145. significantly improve FM StepUp and keep the same low registration
  146. fee.

  148. 1.3. Features of the FM StepUp v.2.0
  149. ------------------------------------
  150.  
  151. The following is the list of features the File Manager obtains
  152. after installing the FM StepUp. The signs 'NEW!' and 'UPDATED:'
  153. are used to mark new or updated features in comparison with
  154. previous versions of the FM StepUp.
  155.  
  156. UPDATED:
  157.      1. 14 standard dialog boxes of the File Manager are now
  158.         updated by the FM StepUp (and you are able to prevent any
  159.         of them from updating, if you like!). Almost ALL the edit
  160.         controls of the dialog boxes are provided with history
  161.         lists keeping track of the text you typed into edit boxes.
  162.         With FM StepUp you are able to recall any of them and edit
  163.         it, if necessary, without typing all the text from
  164.         scratch. (Before version 2.0 only a few specific dialog
  165.         boxes were enhanced with the history lists).
  166.  
  167.      2. The following dialog boxes: Move, Copy, and Copy Disk, are
  168.         provided with the 'Verify' check boxes which enable you to
  169.         easily set the verify mode on or off (with the same effect
  170.         as entering command VERIFY ON/OFF at the DOS command
  171.         prompt) before performing the operations.
  172.  
  173. NEW! 3. The Run dialog box is supplied with two additional
  174.         buttons, 'Command' and 'Argument', allowing you to browse
  175.         your disks and choose a file to run or supply its filename
  176.         as an argument for the command line.
  177.  
  178.      4. The Move and Copy dialog boxes are provided with an
  179.         additional button, 'Browse', in case you forgot the name of the
  180.         directory to copy/move files in.
  181.  
  182.      5. Print dialog is now provided with:
  183.         1) check box 'Copy to PRN' which makes you able to
  184.           quickly print plain ASCII files, not necessarily
  185.           associated with applications, or binary files obtained
  186.           with using the 'Print to file' (or the like) option
  187.           provided by many applications;
  188.  
  189. NEW!    2) check box 'Eject', allowing you to specify whether to
  190.           eject the last page or not, that is convenient for some
  191.           printers;
  192.  
  193. NEW!    3) edit box 'Copies', where you can specify the number
  194.           of copies to make.
  195.  
  196.         The controls 2) and 3) above are activated and used only
  197.         when using the 'Copy to PRN' mode.

  199.      6. The main menu of the File Manager is getting a new item,
  200.         StepUp, containing a number of additional commands:
  201.  
  202.         New File - to instantaneously create a new file;
  203.  
  204.         View File - to view the contents of the file currently
  205.                 selected in the File Manager Directory Window
  206.                 using the Default Viewer;
  207.  
  208.         Edit File - to edit the contents of a selected file using
  209.                 the Default Editor. You are specifying the
  210.                 applications to be used as Default Editor and
  211.                 Viewer in the 'Preferences' dialog box of the FM
  212.                 StepUp;
  213.  
  214. NEW!    Execute - to perform a user-defined action on the
  215.                 currently selected file or to launch an
  216.                 application. By default it contains the following
  217.                 commands:
  218.  
  219.                 Control Panel - to launch the Windows Control
  220.                         Panel from the File Manager;
  221.  
  222.                 Clipboard - to run the Windows Clipboard viewer;
  223.  
  224.                 DOS Prompt - to start the DOS session from the
  225.                         File Manager;
  226.  
  227.                 PIF Editor - to run the PIF Editor;
  228.  
  229.                 UnZip - to run the PKUNZIP utility for the
  230.                         currently selected file (assuming it's a
  231.                         ZIP archive);
  232.  
  233.                 UnArj - to perform the 'ARJ x' command for the
  234.                         currently selected file (assuming it's an
  235.                         archive produced by the ARJ utility);
  236.  
  237.                 You can change the commands of the 'Execute' menu,
  238.                 add new commands and otherwise customize it using
  239.                 the 'Preferences' dialog box of the FM StepUp.

  241.         Special - to perform some useful operations:
  242.  
  243. UPDATED:    Total Size - to calculate the total length and space
  244.                 occupied for all the selected files and
  245.                 directories, including all the subdirectories; the
  246.                 directory to be analyzed can be selected in either
  247.                 Directory or Tree window of the File Manager;
  248.  
  249. UPDATED:    Change Date/Time - to change the date and/or time of
  250.                 all the selected files (not for just one file);
  251.  
  252. NEW!        Run Screen Saver - to launch the default Windows
  253.                 Screen Saver (usually specified with the Control
  254.                 Panel) any time you want to leave your machine (if
  255.                 you are using a screen saver with the password
  256.                 protection - you don't have to wait 5 min. to
  257.                 activate it!);
  258.  
  259.             Return to DOS,
  260.             Restart Windows,
  261.             Reboot System - name says it all;
  262.                 
  263.         Preferences  - to customize FM StepUp:
  264.  
  265. UPDATED:   - change the Default Viewer and/or Editor; you can now
  266.                 browse the directories to find the application you
  267.                 wish to use as the Default Viewer or Editor;
  268.  
  269. NEW!       - set up the desired way of dealing with the associated
  270.                 files;
  271.  
  272.            - specify the size of the 'history' lists;
  273.  
  274. NEW!       - choose the way of displaying new icon for the File
  275.                 Manager;
  276.  
  277. UPDATED:   - specify new name for the FM StepUp's menu item in the
  278.                 File Manager's main menu;

  280. NEW!       - customize the Quick Menu;

  282. NEW!       - customize the Execute Menu;

  286.                 (a) choose which standard dialog boxes of the File

  292.                     displaying the controls;

  305.      7. The right button of the mouse is now used to activate the
  306.         Quick Menu - a set of frequently used commands, so that
  307.         you don't have to spend time finding them in the File
  308.         Manager's menu now. Starting from version 2.0, the Quick
  309.         Menu consists of two portions:
  310.  
  311.         Top portion: the fixed set of the File Manager commands,
  312.                 collected in one place for your convenience. You
  313. UPDATED:        can customize that part using the Preference
  314.                 dialog box. Any commands can be made easily
  315.                 accessible, even those created by you to be used
  316.                 in the 'Execute' menu;
  317.  
  318. NEW!    Bottom portion: the history list of the commands used. The
  319.                 most frequently used commands are accumulated here
  320.                 automatically and can be easily re-used.
  321.  
  322. NEW!    You can also specify the most convenient way of choosing
  323.         commands from the Quick Menu - with the left or right
  324.         button of mouse!

  326. UPDATED:
  327.      8. All the dialog boxes of the File Manager are now displayed
  328.         with 3D effects (like that of Excel and some other
  329.         applications). The bug which displayed improper 3D effects
  330.         with some video drivers has been fixed.

  332. NEW! 9. FM StepUp comes with new cool icon for File Manager and
  333.         you can specify its using with the Preferences dialog box;
  334.  
  335. NEW! 10. For Network System Administrators:
  336.  
  337.         With the File Manager StepUp v.2.0 you can restrict the
  338.         user's access to some of the features of the File Manager.
  339.         (Microsoft has made it possible to restrict the Program
  340.         Manager but somehow forgot to do it for the File Manager!)
  341.         With the FM StepUp, you can place the file FMSTEPUP.SYS in
  342.         the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, make the [Restriction]
  343.         section in that file, and add the following boolean
  344.         entries to it (standard rules for specifying boolean
  345.         entries of the win.ini and system.ini files apply here;
  346.         particularly, 1/ON/TRUE/YES can be used interchangeably to
  347.         turn the mode on, 0/OFF/FALSE/NO - to turn it off):
  348.  
  349.         NoShowHiddenSysFiles - to disable the 'Show Hidden/System
  350.                 Files' check box of the 'By File Type' dialog box;
  351.  
  352.         NoChangeFileAttrib - to disable the 'Attributes' group of
  353.                 the 'Properties' dialog box (and prevent users from
  354.                 changing attributes of files)
  355.  
  356.         NoRun - to disable 'OK' button of the 'Run' dialog box and
  357.                 prevent users from running applications using it;
  358.  
  359.         NoSaveFMSettings - to prevent users from saving the
  360.                 current settings of the File Manager on exit;
  361.  
  362.         NoCloseFileManager - to prevent user from closing the File
  363.                 Manager (with some restrictions);
  364.  
  365.         NoChangeFileDateTime - to disable 'OK' button on the
  366.                 Change Date/Time dialog and prevent users from
  367.                 modifying these file attributes;
  368.  
  369.         NoUninstallStepUp - to prevent user from uninstalling the
  370.                 FM StepUp (with some restrictions);
  371.  
  372.         NoSaveStepUpSettings - to prevent users from saving the
  373.                 current settings of the FM StepUp on exit;
  374.  
  375.         NoCustomizeExecMenu - to prevent users from customizing
  376.                 the 'Execute' menu of the FM StepUp;

  378.         NoCustomizeQuickMenu - to prevent users from customizing
  379.                 the Quick Menu of the FM StepUp;
